Plano City Information
Plano is the ninth largest city in Texas and the 71st most populated city in the United States. In 2005 Plano was designated the best place to live in the Western United States by CNN Money Magazine. Settlers came to the area known as Plano back in the 1840’s and quickly a sawmill and gristmill sprang up. The town in it’s early days had many names suggested, even one after then President Millard Fillmore but the local residents suggested Plano, which means ‘Flat’ in Spanish. After the Houston and Central Texas Railway came through the towns growth was significant. Many present day Planonians have forgotten this but back in 1881 a fire raged through the central business district taking down most of the buildings at that time. The town was quickly rebuilt and again grew and was successful showing the perseverance of the local Plano community. Present day, Plano is the headquarters for many large corporations such as J.C. Penny, Frito-Lay and more. Plano is also known as the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) home, and training grounds for such Olympic champions as Carley Patterson and Nastia Liukin.
